You can trim an already uploaded YouTube video in YouTube Studio > Content > select the video > Editor > Trim & cut. Drag the blue handles to remove the beginning or end. Choose New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview every boundary, then save.
The video keeps its URL, views, and comments, which is the main advantage over uploading a replacement. The tradeoff is control: Studio is for corrections, not a complete timeline edit, and saved changes may not be reversible. Trim the beginning or end in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Open Content, then click the title or thumbnail of the uploaded video.
- Choose Editor in the left menu.
- Click Trim & cut. A blue boundary appears around the footage you will keep.
- Drag the left handle to remove the beginning or the right handle to remove the end. You can also enter exact timecodes when the interface offers the fields.
- Click Preview and play several seconds before and after each new boundary.
- Choose Save only after the preview starts cleanly and the remaining audio makes sense.
Processing can take time. The public video may continue showing the old version while YouTube applies the edit.
Remove a section from the middle
Open Trim & cut, move to the unwanted section, and choose New cut. The red range represents the part to remove; footage outside it remains. Enter or drag the start and end, confirm the cut, and preview the transition.
Listen for sentence fragments, music jumps, and visual discontinuity. Removing a mistake from the picture does not automatically create a natural audio edit. If the cut leaves a click or an unfinished thought, repair the source in a full editor and upload a new version instead.

If the public URL must remain unchanged, Studio can be the right compromise. If the new story requires multiple cuts, reordering, or visual repair, create a new master and publish it as a new video.
Build a safe cut list before saving
Write every removal as a start–end pair, one per line, and paste it into the calculator above. It merges overlapping ranges and returns the final duration. Then review the list in three passes:
- Meaning: Does the remaining speech still make a complete claim?
- Continuity: Does the picture or sound jump reveal the cut?
- Metadata: Do chapters, captions, cards, pinned comments, and description timecodes still point to the correct moments?
Update chapter timestamps after processing finishes. Check captions around each removed segment, especially when an auto-generated track existed before the edit.
Turn a YouTube video into a Short
Studio’s trim control does not convert a landscape upload into a polished vertical clip. For repurposing, use a full editor:
- Start from the original source instead of downloading a compressed platform copy.
- Select one idea with a complete setup and payoff.
- Cut it to the shortest version that preserves meaning.
- Reframe to 9:16 and follow the active speaker or subject.
- Add corrected captions inside the mobile safe area.
- Export a clean vertical MP4 and upload it as a Short.
Keep the Short focused on one promise. A highlight is not simply the first 60 seconds of a long video; it needs its own opening and conclusion.
Common YouTube trimming problems
The Save button is unavailable
Confirm that a valid change exists and the preview has finished loading. Some videos or channel states have editing restrictions. YouTube also documents limitations for certain unedited videos with very high view counts outside the Partner Programme.
Processing is stuck
Wait before creating more edits. Check the video from an incognito window and YouTube Studio later. Do not discard the original master while a platform edit is processing.
The cut removed too much
Use Undo or remove the cut before saving. After saving, recovery options can be limited, which is why the cut list and full preview are essential.

Does trimming change the video URL?
No. Editing the existing upload in YouTube Studio preserves its URL and normally retains views and comments.
Can I trim a YouTube video on mobile?
The full uploaded-video Editor workflow is designed for desktop YouTube Studio. Mobile apps can edit a new file before upload, but they do not provide the same post-publication trim workflow in every account.
Can I replace the video file without changing the URL?
YouTube does not provide a general file replacement that keeps the same URL. Studio can trim or blur an existing upload; a substantially rebuilt video usually requires a new upload.
